A Rant: Social Media Services or MLM?

I cannot go on Instagram or TikTok without being bombarded with:

‘Buy my 10-step guide’

‘Make $10K in 1 month using my 10-step guide’

‘Here’s how I made 6-figures as a stay-at-home mom, using my 10-step guide’

‘Comment GUIDE and I’ll DM you the link’

‘LINK IN BIO’

And, I’ve been falling for it. 

No, I’m not clicking the links or commenting for a DM. I’m finding myself thinking

‘Maybe it is as easy as 10 steps. This whole time I’ve been making it harder for myself.’

Are any other small business owners been feeling this way?

I just refuse to believe that it is THAT easy.

That all our problems can be solved in 10 steps - guaranteed! 

I get that there is an algorithm that we can study and manipulate content around.

But, what if I told you that the algorithm is constantly changing?

Those guides will be out of date come a few months. 

Here is where I get to the MLM of it all.

What do you think step 10 is on every single one of those 10-step guides?

10. Create, publish, and push your own 10-step guide!

If it’s not a pyramid, it’s a never-ending spiral of manipulation.

These guides are preying on the insecurity that comes with owning a small business.

If we spend a little more time creating content that is genuine and helpful, we may not see 6-figures in one month, but we will see positive, sustainable business results and a community you can rely on.

Maybe I’m naive for believing that human connection is still the core of social media. 

But, we as consumers and as small business owners have the power to be why people support local businesses and invest in their communities. WE can post content that people care about! 

It just takes a little work.
